Do broacasters (and I include the cable channels here) think we don't have any sort of guide as to what's coming up in next few days (or even in the next hour)? Because it seems that just about every channel I scroll through has a new addition to the on-screen text. Something along the lines of "New episode of Ice Road Truckers - Sunday - 9pm". This stays there during a repeat of Ice Road Truckers on the History Channel. Why? I have my newspaper's tv schedule. I can see when it's going to be repeated (besides the original broadcast on Sunday night). Remember, we already see stations' logos on the screen. How much more do we need to have displayed on the screen? Of course, we also get the crawls and pop-ups and other types of annoyances - all in the name of telling us things we really don't need to know about at the moment. Sometimes we even get the good news that informs us of the name of the show we are actually watching. Gee, the cable / satellite box tells us that already if we didn't know. Granted those things come on the screen and then go away after a second or two, but they do block whatever image is there.
Of course, NBC has not only its peacock on the screen, but the corporate olympic rings (don't tell me that the olympics are populated by amateurs anymore) too. But they too started with the 'new episode of L&O' message, so I stopped watching L&O this season. See, it makes it real easy for me to not watch a station's shows if they do that.
And when the Oscars were on ABC earlier this year, they were trumpeting it (air-horning was more like it) with a huge logo next to their ABC logo on the screen.
Right now, I think the worst (pun intended) channel is BBC Amercia. They not only have the logo, and some text for an upcoming whatever, but also the name of the show you're watching. It's a wonder you can even see the picture.
